SOUNDplay is NAISA’s annual fall festival of sound and media art. This year’s edition rounds out a one year exploration of the theme Digital in Nature with installations, performances and a workshop.

Tree Earth Sky by Wild Empathy
& The Sound of Tree Rings by Simon Lysander Overstall
November 10, 2022 to January 16, 2023

Tree Earth Sky is a VR experience that invites visitors to look and listen to the underground mycelium network and its connected old-growth grove of trees on Vancouver Island, in 8K definition with ambisonic audio. Sound of Tree Rings is a generative musical work composed from the tree rings of ‘tree cookie’ originating from an old growth cedar tree in Stanley Park (Xwayxway) downed in the windstorm of 2006.

The Vancouver-based Julie Andreyev, artist-researcher-educator, and composer-media artist Simon Lysander Overstall have been collaborating on a variety of ecologically focused new media and sound works, since 2004. They co-lead research-creation projects, recently Wild Empathy—immersive art exploring old-growth trees and ancient forests—and currently Branching Songs, sound art that listens to trees for the forest.

Videomusic Installation – Immersions and Resonances
November 10, 2022 to January 16, 2023

Spending time immersed in nature can bring to the surface evidence of not just what is visible or audible in nature but what is unspoken or unseen in the consciousness of the perceiving individual. This program of videomusic works contains reflections on the natural spaces encountered by artists of a variety of disciplines. Included on the program is KippenHeimWeiler by Raphaël Néron, breathwatersoundscannon by Iddo Aharony and Arom Choi, and a new NAISA anniversary commission, Space_03 by Hector Centeno.

Branching Songs by Julie Andreyev and Simon Lysander Overstall

Branching Songs is a one day workshop that opens creative pathways connecting with trees and the natural world, by combining acoustic ecology methods with audio technologies. The workshop will take place in the forested areas of Warbler’s Roost (on Deer Lake in Lount Township) and is designed to enhance your awareness of trees using your senses, mind’s eye communication, listening and multi-species creativity. Participants will be introduced to the creative world of trees and their connected mycelium network. They will listen to the unique features of trees using unaided and amplified listening techniques, and then collaborate with trees to create sound art, using contact microphones, geophones, improvisation and performance methods. Participants should bring their own over the ear headphones and SD card (or micro-SD with adapter). NAISA will provide additional equipment as necessary.

Shoreline Listening

A program of soundscape works that are all inspired from listening experiences at different shorelines around the world. The works draw from personal diaries, songs, sound explorations and the joy of field recording in their compositions. Featured as part of these works is Zoe Gordon’s Sound Diary 21, Deirdre Morrison’s Closer, Closer by Deirdre Morrison and Pete Stoller’s Cullykhan Water.

Immersions and Resonances
November 12, 2022, 7:00pm

Hector Centeno presents a new work Space_02 commissioned in honour of NAISA’s 20th anniversary along with works from the Immersions and Resonances videomusic collection. Space_02 is derived from processing photogrammetry, spatial audio (ambisonic) and still images that were captured during a period of attentive immersion and observation conducted by him at Warbler’s Roost in South River. The materials captured are used to create a photorealistic virtual place composed of 3D geometry and reactive spatial audio.
