Lynn Christine Kelly: the Forest for the Trees

the Forest for the Trees: an Installation by Lynn Christine Kelly

cSpace King Edward, Second Floor Gallery, Calgary
Exhibition and Event Dates: April 7 – April 30, 2022

the Forest for the Trees envelopes the gallery, offering an immersive experience that aims to bring something of the forest to the city. An installation of fabric trees, all suspended from above, with diffuse light filtering through, and the occasional haunting sound of nature enhances the feeling you might be somewhere other than a building downtown. As you walk through the trees you cannot help but touch them, moving them, disturbing them. After you pass by, the disruption fades and the trees return to their natural state of being. The work is a subtle comment on how the environment restores itself after humankind has gone. Several large scale paintings accompany the installation.

Kelly believes an artist must make work that is true to their beliefs and comes from their own particular way of seeing the world. Growing up in the Shuswap region of British Columbia, with a father engaged in the forest industry, she learned at a young age to appreciate the great outdoors. As an adult she moved to the city and has resided in a city ever since. Multifaceted, her work involves painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation and all of the work lacks an overtly human presence. The work talks about the cycles of life, regeneration if you will, and the remain, or lack thereof, of humankind’s imprint.

The artist will be in attendance from 2 until 4 p.m. on April 30th. To meet the artist on a different day and time, please contact Kelly directly and she will arrange to meet you there.
