Artist Statement
In Linear Terms explores the relationship between structured thought and the dimensions of human experience that extend beyond the physical self. Through abstraction, Delio Delgado investigates the tension between the tangible and intangible, the visible and invisible, the measurable and metaphysical.
The exhibition begins with the language of the line, strong, deliberate, and directional. These linear elements serve as metaphors for the systems, frameworks, and rational structures through which we often understand reality. As the works unfold, these ordered forms fragment, dissolve, and transform into fluid geometries and atmospheric fields of color, suggesting a movement beyond certainty toward a more interconnected and expansive understanding of existence.
Organic geometric forms appear throughout the series, embodying the physical body and its reliance on structure, orientation, and material presence. Interwoven among them are more elusive and ethereal elements that evoke thought, memory, emotion, intuition, and spiritual awareness. Through this interplay, the paintings examine the ways in which human beings navigate both the concrete realities of everyday life and the unseen forces that shape perception and meaning.
Color, texture, texts, and form become vehicles for emotional inquiry. Harmonious passages invite contemplation and trust, while moments of tension and ambiguity reflect the uncertainties that accompany our engagement with the unknown. The resulting works operate as visual metaphors for the continual negotiation between order and mystery, logic and intuition, presence and transcendence.
With In Liner Terms, Delgado invites viewers to consider how reliance extends beyond the material body and how the unseen dimensions of experience remain essential to our understanding of being. The exhibition offers a space for reflection on the delicate balance between physical reality and the broader, often invisible, forces that inform human existence.

About the Artist
Delio Delgado is an established Canadian artist based in Hamilton, Ontario, whose multidisciplinary practice engages painting, embodiment, and spatial inquiry. Born in the Dominican Republic, Delgado’s artistic formation is rooted in a transnational education that bridges Caribbean, North American, and European contexts. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in multidisciplinary studies in 1998 at the National School of Visual Arts in Santo Domingo. He later continued his studies at Altos de Chavón School of Design, an institution affiliated with Parsons School of Design in New York City, graduating in 2001. In 2011, Delgado expanded his practice into digital processes by earning a degree in Digital Media Production from Mohawk College in Canada.
Over a career spanning three decades (1996–2026), Delgado has developed a sustained and evolving body of work that reflects his commitment to material exploration, cultural memory, and the relationship between the body and constructed space. His practice is informed by his lived experience within the Caribbean diaspora and his perspective as an artist navigating disability, which contributes to a nuanced engagement with form, rhythm, and physicality in his work.
Delgado has exhibited extensively across the Caribbean, Europe, the United States, and Canada, presenting work in both institutional and alternative contexts. His exhibitions include venues such as the Houston Museum of African American Culture and the Ulrich Museum of Art in the United States, as well as the Civic Museum of the City of Cremona in Italy. In Canada, his work has been shown at the Art Gallery of Peterborough in Ontario, alongside artist-run and independent spaces including YouMe Gallery, the Carnegie Gallery, and Gallery 501 in Edmonton.
Internationally, Delgado has participated in significant biennial exhibitions, including the Biennial of the Dominican Republic and parallel programming associated with the Havana Biennial in Cuba. These presentations situate his work within broader global dialogues on contemporary art, identity, and spatial practice.
Through his ongoing studio work and exhibition history, Delgado continues to contribute to contemporary painting by integrating geometry, movement, and embodied knowledge. His work reflects a persistent inquiry into how form can hold memory, presence, and transformation across cultural and physical boundaries.
