Call for Artists: Chinatown Road Mural, Calgary

The City and Calgary Arts Development are looking for an artist or artist team to design a temporary road mural for 3 Avenue S.E. between Centre Street and 1 Street S.E. in Chinatown. Contributing to the overall vibrancy of the Chinatown area, the mural is intended to add visual interest and encourage motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to slow down and explore the community through its art.

Chinatown is one of Calgary’s most distinctive cultural communities, with a long history. It is a unique area, important to Calgary and to its residents, visitors and businesses.

The location of the road mural in the heart of Chinatown, within blocks of the former Indian Friendship Centre, opens opportunities to explore the community’s roots through varying perspectives, including the relationship between Indigenous people and the Chinese and Pan-Asian people that settled on Treaty 7 Territory.

Artists and artist teams with connections to Chinatown and experience creating outdoor murals are encouraged to apply.

Two artist information sessions will be held virtually to answer questions from artists interested in applying for this opportunity:

  • January 10 from 10 a.m. to noon
  • January 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Please visit Eventbrite to register in advance for the sessions.

Deadline for applications is 12 p.m. MST, Monday, January 31, 2021.
