Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full‐time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor position in 2D + Experimental Animation within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM). Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səḻ ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil‐Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world‐renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Bachelor of Media Arts in 2D and Experimental Animation, situated in the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM), prepares students to excel as versatile animation creators, storytellers, and filmmakers. The program provides an aesthetic, technical, conceptual, theoretical and historical understanding of animation. Students are encouraged to develop their artistic voice within a context of artistic expression, formal exploration, and technical experimentation towards creative journeys and careers. This includes various types of production in 2D animation, animation design and story development, character animation, storyboarding, game production, visual effects, motion graphics, AR/VR/XR technologies, in the context of independent filmmaking, entrepreneurship or the animation industry. All majors in the DDM Faculty share values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, critical engagement with technology, new research methods, new approaches to design and media, and the making of imaginative and provocative work.
Candidates should be able to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. Candidates should be equally fluent in current media and visual culture discourses and studio practices, and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. Faculty responsibilities include:
- Teaching core and elective studio courses in the Animation curriculum.
- Teaching and mentoring students across multiple year levels at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- Active participation in curriculum and program development and planning.
- Providing service to the Faculty and university-wide governance systems by participation in various committees and working groups, as well as being an active and engaged member of the University community.
- An active research, scholarly, and/or creative practice.
A successful candidate will bring their current knowledge and production expertise in 2D and experimental animation into the academic environment in order to create fulfilling learning experiences for students. They will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:
- terminal degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
- industry experience in 2D and/or Experimental Animation production is preferred;
- university‐level or post‐secondary teaching experience in a related subject area is an asset;
- Supervisory/mentoring experience and demonstrated leadership in collaborative work;
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in an institutional setting.
Areas of focus may include:
- Character animation, design, layout, storyboarding, drawn and digital puppet animation
- Experimental practices, stop motion, motion graphics, extended realities grounded in animation practices.
Applications should address the candidate’s expertise in the areas of teaching, research, and professional practice; and include:
- a cover letter;
- a current curriculum vitae;
- a statement of pedagogy and up to 3 samples of syllabi, assignments, and evidence of teaching effectiveness; or evidence of work and mentorship in a lead/supervisorial role.
- a statement of research;
- a statement on the candidate’s contributions to EDI, regardless of personal characteristics, describing any professional skills, community experience, or willingness to engage in activities that advance institutional diversity and equity in teaching, research, and service;
- supporting materials including an online portfolio of recent work; and
- the names and contact information of three referees.

Emily Carr University is designated by the University Act of BC as a Special Purpose Teaching University, with a focus on a practice-based pedagogy in art and design. Full-time Foundation faculty at ECUAD can expect to teach the equivalent of two six-credit and one three-credit courses per term.

We anticipate commencement in August 2023. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience.
