Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for two (2) to three (3) full-time faculty positions at the rank of Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate Professor in Critical and Cultural Studies within the Faculty of Culture and Community. Situated on the unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.
The Critical and Cultural Studies Area spans courses in: art, design, and media histories and theories; critical humanities; literature; sciences; social sciences; and expansive writing practices from Foundation to Graduate Studies. Our community of scholars and researchers are committed to anti-racist, inclusive and innovative pedagogies; ecological literacies; and decolonial praxes and Indigenous epistemologies. By emphasizing the affinities between Critical and Cultural Studies and studio-based pedagogies and practice-based learning, we encourage our students to recognize the contexts of past, current, and future creative practices and embrace the ethos of an art, media, and design university. Within this interdisciplinary framework, we are seeking individuals with research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Histories, theories and contexts of art, design, or media, with concentrations that span geopolitical contexts beyond North America and Western Europe, and/or in diaspora.
- Writing practices, including collaborative, multilingual, and experimental approaches to art writing, as well as foundation-level writing and composition.
- Critical approaches to popular culture studies.
We are particularly seeking candidates whose research is rigorously invested in transnational and/or anticolonial perspectives on artistic and cultural production.
Prioritizing reading, writing, and discussion as primary learning activities, Critical and Cultural Studies curricula provide art, media, and design students with the tools to engage the social, cultural, and political implications of cultural production. The key vocabulary, discourses, and academic skills—including both independent and collaborative thinking and research—gained and honed through Critical and Cultural Studies courses equip our students with a critical edge in their creative endeavours at Emily Carr University and beyond.
The Critical and Cultural Studies Area is embedded in the Faculty of Culture and Community, which provides the academic core and first-year program for all undergraduate degrees at Emily Carr University. The Faculty also offers a unique and academically-oriented BFA in Critical and Cultural Practices, which enhances interdisciplinary artistic practices with a firm grounding in history, theory, and criticism. The minor in Social Practice and Community Engagement combines community partnerships and project-based learning to model, perform, and enact new and more relational ways to live in the world together.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching and mentoring students across the undergraduate level from first year to fourth year, with opportunities for graduate-level supervision.
- Active participation in curriculum and program development and planning.
- Providing service to the Faculty and University-wide governance systems through participation in various committees and working groups, and being an active member of the wider University community.
- Maintaining an active research, scholarly, and/or creative practice.
A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:
- PhD in relevant discipline (such as Art History, Media Studies, Design Studies, Cultural Studies, English, etc) completed at the time of application; or equivalent graduate degree in a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Teaching experience at the university or post‐secondary level in a related subject area.
- Ability and willingness to teach a range of courses, from large lectures to smaller seminars.
- Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist pedagogies including evidence of teaching effectiveness in multicultural and multilingual classrooms.
- Evidence of work in advancing decolonization, Indigenization, and equity in institutional or organizational settings.
- Strong communication and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines.

- a statement of research;
- a personal statement on the candidate’s contributions to diversity, regardless of personal characteristics, describing any professional skills, community experience, or willingness to engage in activities that advance institutional diversity and equity in teaching, research, and service;
- supporting materials, including a writing sample (up to 30 pages) and, if applying as a scholar-artist, and additional portfolio of work (up to 20 images or link to a website);
