We are thrilled to extend our warmest invitation to the community at large to celebrate with us the launch event of ARCHIVO, a digital archive of Indigenous artists that are from the Latin American region, Latin American, Latin-Caribbean, and those who identify as Latinx artists of the diaspora in Canada. This momentous occasion marks the culmination of seven months of dedicated research, design, and archiving by Sur Gallery’s team, and led by Researcher/Archivist Luz Sierra and Director/Curator Tamara Toledo. Come celebrate with us the remarkable work of the visual artists who are part of ARCHIVO.

About ARCHIVO

Sur Gallery opened its doors in 2015, disseminating and articulating discourse around contemporary Latin American, Latinx, Latin-Caribbean and Indigenous contemporary visual artistic practices. In an effort to expand its mandate, Sur Gallery began an archival project in October of 2022, to build a digital repository dedicated to visual artists and their practices in the diaspora in Canada funded by the Canada Council for the Arts through its Digital Now Program as well as by Canadian Heritage through its Community Support, Multiculturalism, and Anti-Racism Initiatives Events component.

ARCHIVO serves as an archival digital platform to allow for accessibility, searchability, and discoverability of the diaspora of visual artists in Canada. ARCHIVO’s intention is to digitally save, connect, and reflect on the important work this diaspora has contributed with and to Canada’s collective memory in the hopes to situate it into Canadian art history.

The launch event will be a moment to come together in person and celebrate the immense efforts that have gone into creating ARCHIVO. It will allow everyone to get to know the archive, explore its rich collection, and engage in discussions about the archive platform with Sur Gallery’s team. Moreover, it will be an opportunity to meet and connect with visual artists whose works are featured in ARCHIVO.

We invite you to join us and be part of this exciting moment as we make public the first phase of ARCHIVO. Help us honour and support the visual artists represented in this digital archive.

The gallery space will also be open with our current exhibition Overcoming Otherness curated by Tamara Toledo. For more information on the exhibition please visit surgalleryvirtual.ca
