Professor, Teaching Art in the School and the Community – Studio (Part-time)
Sheridan is looking for an outstanding individual to join our faculty and to teach part-time in our fourth-year level Teaching Art in the School course in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design.
Sheridan seeks a part-time professor to teach a one-semester, synchronous online section of the following course:
Teaching Art in the School and the Community – FAS455H on Tuesdays 2:00 – 5:00pm over the 12-week Winter session, January 4th – April 1st 2021.
Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach the practice of delivering an art curriculum at the junior, secondary, and post-secondary school levels, as well as in alternative education programs. The incumbent will introduce and connect students to a range of art education and community arts initiatives for students to gain experience in a setting of their choice. Students investigate theories on learning, assessment, engagement, diversity and social justice in education. Responsibilities include implementing the current curriculum in a collegial setting.

Art and Art History, a collaborative program between Sheridan and the University of Toronto at Mississauga, offers both an Honours Bachelor of Arts from UTM and an Advanced Diploma in Art and Art History from Sheridan. Interdisciplinary studios include: photography, painting, printmaking, design, new technologies, drawing, and sculpture and installation. Art history courses span the history of art from the ancient to the contemporary world, across Europe, North America, and Asia.
What You’ll be Doing
Sheridan faculty provide academic leadership to programs and courses within their areas of expertise and contribute to the creation of a learning-centred environment where students can develop to their full potential. They also contribute to College, School and program excellence by collaborating on a variety of initiatives such as new program development, applied research and alternative delivery strategies.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant and reflective of best practices within the relevant professional/program disciplines;
- Creating an effective environment for learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;
- Designing appropriate strategies and tools for facilitating and assessing student learning;
- Developing multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies, and incorporating appropriate educational technologies into the learning process.
Professors also ensure that students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques; provide individual tutoring and academic counselling; and evaluate student progress/achievement within assigned courses.

The successful candidate(s) will also meet the following qualifications:
- MFA preferred
- Experience in teaching at the post-secondary level is preferred
- An artist who can demonstrate an ability to teach art education and community art practices at the fourth-year level
- An artist who has an informed view of a range of approaches to art education, community art and social engaged practices.
- Network of contacts with other professionals, art organizations and employers
- Committed to excellence in teaching and learning and to working within a team environment
- Knowledge of industry specific software

- Fifteen (15) digital images of your artwork and ten (10) images of your students’ artwork, jpeg format, maximum 1024 x 768 pixels, posted to Flickr. Link must be provided.
- Five (5) minutes of a combination of sound or video files instead of, or in addition to, digital still images may be submitted by artists working in installation, video, audio, performance or electronic media. Submit audio or video files to either Vimeo or YouTube. Link must be provided.
- A list of images, video and sound files that you are submitting. Digital image files must be numbered and titled, and correspond to the support material list (e.g. 01.title.jpg). For each artwork on the list, include date, title, medium and dimensions (height x width, specify in. or cm)
- A current resume and a letter briefly outlining your experience, qualifications and teaching philosophy in relation to contemporary art practices as either a PDF or MSWord attachment no later than November 22nd 2020, sent to Edward Loach, Academic Portfolio Administrator, Art and Art History at Edward.email@example.com
