New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Reimagine for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2024 programming.
The push for renewal following the pandemic along with adjustments necessary to meet climate goals suggest new structures and terms for moving forward. What opportunities do those present creatively? What new stories do you imagine hearing? How will artists Reimagine the sound art of tomorrow based on the choices that lie ahead. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme Reimagine are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component. Note: there is a $5 submission fee.
Submitted works will be considered for 2 annual awards:
The James Bailey Award – a $300 award that recognizes a work submitted by a Canadian artist to NAISA’s call for submissions which best exemplifies an inventive and adventurous spirit and pushes the boundaries of radio and transmission art. Special consideration will be given for a work submitted by an artist who is new to the field of radio and transmission art.
The Andra McCartney Mentorship Award – a $300 award and a mentorship residency awarded to an artist who has submitted a work, is new to the field of sound art, and who lives in a Northern Ontario. Special consideration will be given for an artist who identifies as female / non-binary, and/or indigenous.
Both annual awards have been established by NAISA with a gift made by Kevin Austin.
2) Springscapes Series
April 13 – June 12, 2023
naisa.ca/festivals/springscapes
Springscapes is a series of installations, workshops and live-stream events that highlights the dramatic changes that take place in the natural soundscape from winter to spring.
“The transformation of the natural soundscape from winter to spring is a distinguished feature of the Almaguin Highlands. NAISA’s Springscapes series is inspired by this dramatic shift. For 2023, NAISA staff invites members of the local community to participate in a community recording project that will provide the content for NAISA’s Community Soundscapes exhibition. The sounds will be updated weekly and played back on NAISA’s multi-channel system, so that we can share the sounds of spring that are special to us.” — Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art
