The team

The Ryerson Image Centre boasts three interrelated areas of activity: an exhibition program, which addresses topics of social, cultural, aesthetic, and historical concern from a variety of contemporary perspectives; its research program, which conducts and facilitates inquiry into primary resource materials and offers lectures, symposia, and publications devoted to the history of photography; and, accessible in its Peter Higdon Research Centre, a collection of photography spanning the medium’s history—including the renowned Black Star Collection of twentieth-century photo-reportage. The RIC is also home to several artists’ archives, including those of Berenice Abbott, Wendy Snyder MacNeil, Jo Spence, and Werner Wolff.

Our museum-standard facility consists of approximately 4,500 square feet of exhibition space; a Great Hall for lectures, conferences, screenings and receptions; a glassed-in entrance colonnade with a 16 foot new media wall visible from the street; a temperature and moisture controlled vault for our growing collection; and a state of the art, professionally-staffed research centre.

The opportunity

As a member of the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), you will provide support through the planning and implementation of strategic marketing, communication, and public relations plans under the direction of RIC’s Director and Manager. You will develop and implement marketing and publicity campaigns and design digital and print materials to enhance RIC’s profile and reputation and drive exhibition and event attendance. You will provide marketing support to all RIC units and support the marketing initiatives of various partners across campus and in the arts community. You will also build and foster relationships with external partners for media exposure and sponsorships.


To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program in Art History, Photography, Business Communication, Marketing, Journalism, Cultural Management/Administration or in a relevant field is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant marketing and communications experience in the cultural/media/arts sector, including development of materials in print and online formats. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in public relations, media relations, working with established contacts, and/or building a network.
  • Working knowledge of marketing and branding strategies with strong research, analytical and editorial skills.
  • Strong knowledge of art history, photography, contemporary art, current events and contemporary culture.
  • Ability to curate and foster strong working relationships with industry contacts.
  • Publishing knowledge and skills to create, edit/proof and prepare final digital and print-ready marketing and communication materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships.
  • Strong understanding of print production processes such as the requirements/specifications for print-ready materials.
  • Knowledge of the production lifecycle from concept to final product.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize high volumes of work.
  • Comprehensive computer skills and command of various applications and tools such as MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms and management software, web analytics, collections management software, etc.
