About the Artists
This stunning collection of paintings and inventive sculpture marks Luminato Gallery as a space dedicated to bold innovation. The work on display is both unique and alluring as artists tackle themes of hope, perception, and environmentalism. Contemporary ways of seeing and creating are subverted to challenge viewer perspectives and encourage deeper contemplation.
Vladimir Kanic and Victoria Kovalenchikova challenge art’s purpose amidst the climate crisis. In his living sculptures, Kanic uses algae to harness the CO2 produced by spectators to create oxygen. His work calls for a de-carbonized future, using art as a tool for change. Victoria Kovalenchikova’s work showcases Earth’s awe-inspiring monumentality, encouraging viewers to appreciate the planet and ultimately, work to save it.
Elle Belz, Jamie Maclean, and Stephen Yau create paintings that honour nature’s understated power. MacLean paints stunning Canadian forests, respecting Canada’s expansive grandeur, while Stephen Yau’s work depicts birch trees with a level of luminosity that calls for a deeper respect for Mother Nature. Similarly, Elle Belz’s large-scale floral works bring viewers closer, examing the intricate complexity of earth’s flora and fauna.
Artists Rick Lowe and Emre Namyeter, use form to challenge perception. Namyeter’s colour-shifting sculptures encourage audiences to reconsider ways of looking and perceiving while Rick Lowe investigates the fluidity of resin as a tool for understanding surprise, unpredictability, and exploration.
