Joseph Drapell painted fourteen variations of his large painting titled the “Great Spirit, Georgian Bay”. The artist cast the traditional male spirit, Manitou, into a dream-like silhouette of a giant female figure, defying logic or depiction. The overwhelming sense of the universe in these paintings is not all Drapell sets out to pursue. Each painting offers its own cultural reference to important women in history. Fourteen Variations is an ambitious and powerful group of paintings that offers an interesting perspective on painting and culture, produced by one of Canada’s greatest living abstract artists, Joseph Drapell.
