CONTACT is pleased to announce Montréal-based Fatine-Violette Sabiri as the 2022 Burtynsky Grant winner for their book project Kiss Landing.

The jury, comprising Edward Burtynsky, Mark Bennett, Clea Forkert, and Romke Hoogwaerts had the pleasure of reviewing a wide range of compelling, competitive photobook proposals from across Canada.

“Fatine-Violette Sabiri’s Kiss Landing brings together photographs made in Montréal and Casablanca, the two cities that the artist has lived between since early childhood. Comprising portraits, landscapes and still lives made over a 10-year period, the photobook sheds light on the multiplicity of existences embedded in the biracial and migratory experience. The autobiographical images in Kiss Landing demonstrate the artist’s deep sense of curiosity and intimacy within their two communities. Sabiri’s thoughtful plan for self-publication and collaboration across Canada, Morocco, and France to connect with a broader Franco-Maghrebian audience further reinforces the book’s themes of hybridity.”
