Job description

As Executive Director (ED) of the Durham Art Gallery, you will provide inspired leadership to the board, staff, artists and our community to both meet and stretch our goals and impact as a contemporary gallery for the arts. This role will build alignment with the Board of Directors, members, staff and volunteers, while enabling the Durham Art Gallery to sustain its mandate, innovate in expanding its audience, impact and challenge the expectations and possibilities of contemporary art as a path to social justice.

The Executive Director will build the relationships with both influencers and users that will grow the galleries future, and its role within the local and wider community. This role will continually advance the gallery’s messages in a way that is heard, and is one that lives within the actions of the gallery and the hearts of our community.

The Executive Director provides organizational leadership, mentorship and leadership to the Artistic Program Director in aligning programming with strategic goals, provides effective financial management to meet targets and reporting requirements, creates and manages a fundraising strategy to meet financial goals, works with the board treasurer and accountants on yearly financial reporting, collaborates with the board, staff, members and volunteers to provide engaging outreach and advocacy for the gallery, identifies and evaluates risks to the organization, and ensures the gallery is in compliance with current legislation and regulations.

Candidate requirements

  • 5 – 10 years’ experience as a manager in an arts institution or equivalent combination of education and gallery management experience.
  • Degree in visual arts/arts administration or equivalent combination of education and gallery management experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the arts sector and best practices for art gallery management, including curatorial and educational programming and collection management.
  • Excellent leadership qualities and outstanding skills in team building, meeting management, facilitation, conflict resolution and public relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful organizational and artistic strategies.

Additional information

The Durham Art Gallery is partially accessible and includes a level entrance access to enter, a wide and unobstructed pathways within the interior, automatic doors at the entrance and accessible parking nearby.
