Reporting to the Director of Confederation Centre Art Gallery (CCAG), the Curator directs the gallery’s exhibition and public programming initiatives and oversees collecting, research and publications. The Curator is the public face of the artistic direction of CCAG, mediating between the work of Canadian artists and publics.

The Curator plays a key role in cultivating and sustaining strong, long-term relationships with artists, donors, Board members, staff, volunteers, and other CCAG stakeholders, including a variety of engaged publics.

The ideal candidate is a creative, self-driven professional with exceptional interpersonal and organizational abilities. They possess a well-established network and a strong knowledge base in Canadian and contemporary art. The Curator is expected to travel for studio visits, research, and relationship-building opportunities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

In consultation with the Director and the CCAG team, the Curator is responsible for:

  • Planning CCAG programming, primarily consisting of exhibitions, public events (including lectures and panels, conferences, screenings, performances, and workshops); for an overview of CCAG programming, including events, publications, and past, present, and upcoming exhibitions, please see: confederationcentre.com/art-gallery
  • Preparing and tracking budgets, timelines, and logistical plans
  • Development of artistic direction, strategic vision, collecting, artist residency and publication program
  • Exhibitions, residencies, and events; development of regular reports on curatorial activities
  • Researching, developing, and presenting of approximately 6-8 curated exhibitions annually, including collections shows, group and solo exhibitions of contemporary and historical Canadian art, and off-site exhibitions
  • Coordination and implementation of touring, guest curated, and community-based exhibitions
  • Engagement with partner institutions, curators, artists, and publics; participation in larger Canadian art context, including juries and conferences
  • Writing of texts associated with exhibitions, collecting justifications, and other applications; ongoing research on collection and exhibition-related topics
  • Preparation of core and project grant applications and fundraising requests; identification and engagement with fundraising opportunities
  • Supervision of curatorial interns and close collaboration with an installation, marketing, and publications team
  • Acting as a spokesperson in public events and media for the gallery’s artistic direction

Skills and Experience

In addition to being a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual who enjoys working in a team environment, applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in art history, curatorial studies and/or 3-5 years of relevant curatorial experience
  • Demonstrated record of exhibition development and experience with program development for institutions
  • Working understanding of the installation process for contemporary art
  • Broad knowledge of art and art history in Canada
  • Experience preparing and working with fixed budgets
  • Proficiency in French and other languages is considered an asset

Compensation

This position is represented by The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local B906. The starting annual salary as of April 1, 2026 (0-6 months) is $69,574. This is a full-time, permanent position for 37.5 hours per week.
