Call for Submissions: Artist / Scholar Residency

Artist / Scholar Residency Description

The University of Victoria (UVic) and Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park (JRSP) Artist Scholar Residency was created by an interinstitutional partnership and their unwavering belief in cultivating the arts. For more information on this partnership, visit here.

This Residency is for artists and scholars seeking space to focus on creating a work for exhibition or publication that is in some way informed by their investigation of Jeffrey Rubinoff’s work and their experience working at the sculpture park.

The successful applicant will enjoy a September-October residency at the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park, on Hornby Island, BC, (for 2 – 6 weeks) with an additional week at UVic, in Victoria, BC, to engage with the Faculty of Fine Arts faculty and students.

Territorial Acknowledgement

The University of Victoria acknowledges and respects the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park is located on the ancestral unceded territories of the K’ómoks, Wei Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, Tla’amin and the Homalco First Nations. We would like to express our gratitude to these Nations that we may use this land to enrich all who seek growth through art.

Project Requirements

• The awardee will relocate to Hornby Island, BC and Victoria, BC for the entire residency period (2 – 6 weeks).
• When applying, the applicant must submit a plan for an exhibition (on Hornby or Victoria, BC), publication submission, research report, or the performance of their work to be realized within 18 months following the residency.
• The awardee will, if asked, hold a show and/or reception or talk at the JRSP at the end of the Hornby-based portion of the residency to present their project.
• The awardee will give a lecture at UVIC during the Victoria-based portion of the residency related to their project (this may involve an exhibition if applicable).
• The awardee is expected to spend a significant part of each week at the JRSP conducting work related to their project.
• The awardee may be asked to engage with other artists, curators or scholars working at the JRSP should their residencies overlap.
• The awardee is required to acknowledge the Jeffrey Rubinoff/UVIC Artist Scholar Residency in all dissemination and promotion of their residency project.
• With the agreement of the JRSP Company of Ideas Forum organizers, the awardee may have the opportunity to attend the Forum the following June.

Eligibility

Artists:
To be eligible to apply for this residency, the applicant must be a professional artist as determined by similar criteria used by the Canada Arts Council. We are looking for a combination of:

• Specialized training in artistic field
• Recognized as a professional by peers in the field
• A history of exhibitions, public presentations and/or publications
• Curatorial activity will also be noted

Scholars:
To be eligible to apply for this residency, the applicant must be a distinguished scholar in a field related to the arts. We are looking for a combination of:

• Specialized experience and/or education in specific field
• A history of research, public presentations and/or publications
• Curatorial or artistic endeavors will also be noted

Compensation

• All travel, food, and accommodation will be covered by the residency, along with a budget to cover materials and shipping (if applicable).
• The awardee will receive a stipend of $5,000 (CAN) in addition to the covered costs.
• The awardee will have access to on-site facilities (library, Interpretive Center, studio, the Park itself).

Selection Process

After submissions are closed, applications will be reviewed by a committee. The successful applicant will be notified by mid-March 2025.

   a.  Include description of the project with cost estimates.
   b.  Include a timeline of proposed project with the number of weeks at JRSP and daily/weekly time working at the Park.
   c.  Include initial ideas about what you could share with students at UVic in Victoria, BC.
   d.  Include a plan for an exhibition, publication submission, research report of your work with details of location/institution, duration, materials, etc.

Accessibility

Both UVic and JRSP are committed to providing spaces that are welcoming to people of all abilities.

The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park is partially accessible as there are accessible washrooms (all gender neutral) and parking near the Interpretive Center, however the Park is acres of grassy, uneven ground. For more information, visit here.

Unfortunately, Hornby Island is a small, remote location and has very limited long-term accommodations available. At present, the accommodation is not accessible as there are stairs to reach the suite with no elevator.
