Call for Submissions: “Looks Good on Paper…”

Propeller Art Gallery
Annual Guest Curated Exhibition: July 8 – 26, 2026
Curated by Nancy Jacobi

Submission Deadline: Wednesday, May 20, 2026, 11:59pm

Submission Fee:
$50 for one or two pieces for Non-Members
$40 for one or two pieces for Propeller Members

Propeller Art Gallery is seeking submissions for “Looks Good on Paper…”, their annual guest-curated exhibition for works on paper, celebrating the medium’s diverse and often unsung creative potential.

Artists are encouraged to thoughtfully select their paper to enhance and highlight their artwork. Consider how the paper’s distinctive colour or texture can make a line drawing or papercut stand out boldly, ensuring its message is clearly asserted.

Alternatively, works may involve layering other media or paper onto an initial drawing, painting, cutting, dyeing, stitching, or collage to build complexity. Submissions may also feature paper transformed into three-dimensional forms, such as sculptures, folded books, lights, mobiles, window hangings, or scrolls.

Propeller Art Gallery anticipates that the resulting exhibition, “Looks Good on Paper…”, will showcase a compelling variety of well-executed artworks, illustrating the creative versatility of paper and the talent of the artists who choose to work with it.

The jury will be looking for an ingenious use of paper as an artwork.
The paper can be mounted on a support if desired.
Keep in mind: it can be any type of paper. Please include the name(s) of the paper used in the list of materials used in the form.
There is no size restriction.

The exhibition will be curated by Nancy Jacobi. The jurors are Nancy Jacobi, Susan Low Beer and George Walker.

About the Curator

Nancy Jacobi discovered the uniqueness of washi (handmade Japanese paper) during her year teaching English in Japan. She soon realized that the production of this 1400-year-old technique was rapidly diminishing. In 1982, she opened The Japanese Paper Place and has since introduced artists to washi’s versatility. Through organizing workshops, mounting exhibitions, building a collection of contemporary washi artworks, writing articles and delivering lectures across the world. The JPP has remained a mecca for washi-lovers and has expanded its reach to every continent.

Artists Empowering Artists since 1996

Propeller Art Gallery is an artist-run co-operative and exhibition space in Toronto’s Queen West Art + Design District that supports innovative, sustainable programming.

Propeller was established in August 1996 by a small group of recent graduates from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). Their mission was to create an affordable community art gallery for emerging Canadian artists, offering a professional exhibition venue and necessary support in career building. Propeller continues to uphold this today, supporting artists from emerging to established through a dynamic approach to arts programming, a venue for exhibiting art, and education through member-assisted learning and collaboration.
