Call for Submissions:
FACE / WASTE Group Exhibition

Submission Deadline: August 25, 2024, 11:59 pm EDT
Exhibition Dates: October 19 – December 15, 2024
Industrial Arts, Markham, ON

Steelcase Art Projects (SAP) is pleased to invite emerging, mid-career and established artists to submit their work that explores the theme of Waste. The exhibition will be held in a semi-demolished space at Industrial Arts in Markham from October to December.

Waste, regarded as worthless material, is a human-defined and controlled concept. When we designate something as waste and discard it into the trash bin, it undergoes a nullification of its monetary value and its symbolic meaning changes. The symbolism of waste extends beyond its origin and final destination, delving into the deeper relationship between humans, the material world, and the land. This involves the social and ecological imagination, practices, and open narratives associated with waste.

FACE / WASTE invites artists to face the waste created through their art practice and daily life, with honesty.

On behalf of Steelcase Art Projects, we acknowledge that it is our responsibility to be engaged in continual learning of the deep history of this land, on this earth provided to humanity upon which we temporarily reside, and upon which is situated Industrial Arts. We are grateful to the Indigenous artists with whom we work for providing us with the opportunity to learn through their artworks. Acknowledging gratitude for this land which sustains us, the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Petun and Neutral people is only the beginning of our responsibility to continually inform ourselves of the ways of indigeneity, the culture and society, past, present and future. We look forward to encouraging gratitude, awareness and ongoing learning about the history of this land, through our programming arm, Steelcase Art Projects.
