Project Requirements

Astrosankofa Arts Initiative, in collaboration with the City of Brampton, invites Black artists and creatives to submit examples of their artwork plus a working concept for the creation of a permanent outdoor memorial artwork at Emancipation Park in Brampton, 7599 Dixie Rd Brampton, ON L5S 1L4. The current budget for the project is $50,000 after taxes, which includes artists fees, fabrication, and installation costs. Astrosankofa will cover insurance costs, concrete footings and pad drawings, engineering review and approval, technical review and approval and drafting services.

In the second stage of this call, successfully shortlisted artists, creatives, and/or art collectives (“Artists”) will have the opportunity to work closely with professional engineers and designers from the Black-led arts organization, Astrosankofa Arts Initiative (“Astrosankofa”). They will assist to conceptualize a design and fabrication outline that will eventually be presented to the Black community of Brampton. In collaboration with the AstroSankofa team, shortlisted artists will create multiple concepts to present to the Black community to critique, provide feedback on or select.

All artists involved will be sub-contracted as part of AstroSankofa’s team to install the permanent art piece at Emancipation Park.

The Emancipation Day Memorial will be installed at Emancipation Park by mid-July, 2024. The public artwork, as a part of the City of Brampton’s monuments and memorials collection, will be featured on the City of Brampton’s Public Art webpage and promoted across the City’s social media channels.

This opportunity is open to Black artists currently residing in Ontario with preference being given to Brampton residents/artists.

Artwork Themes

The city of Brampton and AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives, in consultation with the community has identified the themes of Unity, empowerment, Black liberation and resilience and the legacy of the UNIA, connections to Marcus Garvey and Caribbean emancipation legacies. The artwork should be functional in nature, safe to the public and visually compelling. The artwork can be either a singular structure or a series of works. No power (including photovoltaics) or water will be available to the design.

The total project budget is $50,000 CAD. The budget cover all costs directly associated with the artwork including fees, fabrication, foundation, shipping, installation, engineering and professional services, insurance, permits, travel, and other incidental and production expenses. Shortlisted artist or artist teams will receive $500 CAD each to create detailed proposals in stage 2.

Selection Process

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel. Selected Artist(s) will be invited to present their submission at a community consultation. Selected Artist(s) will work closely with Astrosankofa Arts Initiative throughout the design, fabrication, and installation process. We will be assessing submissions based on:

  • submitter’ connection to the project and region
  • artistic quality
  • file formatting adherence
  • concept compatibility
  • conceptual merit and relatability
  • comprehension of Emancipation Day and Emancipation
  • engineering requirement
  • installation requirement
  • maintenance requirement
  • viability and feasibility
  • budget apportionment

The selection committee will be comprised of local and regional black artists and local leaders in the Black community in Brampton.

Artwork proposals are requested to be included. The Call is open to all creatives who identify as Black and or have connection to Caribbean community living or from Ontario with priority being given to those with a connection to Brampton or living in Brampton.

Stage 1: Call for Submissions (current stage)
Stage 2: 2-4 Shortlisted artists will develop their proposal and present it to the community.

Tentative Project Timeline:

  • February 18 – Call for submissions goes live
  • February 29 – Online session FAQ for Artists
  • March 4 – Submission window close
  • March 11 – 13 – notification will be sent out
  • March 21 – Community Consultation and feedback to present concept will take place
  • May – Fabrication to begin
  • July 20 – 27 – Installation completion

  • Artist Biography / statement
  • Demographic information about the applicant
  • High quality headshot
  • Link to social media or online portfolio
  • Have 2 – 3 examples of past artworks that relates to the call
    ◦  Include date of creation, materials, approximate dimensions, and cost to create or the overall commission amount
  • Have a draft idea for the call
  • Have a proposed budget for idea
