Exhibition Theme

The Canadian Association for Health Humanities (CAHH) invites submissions for Unsilenced Stories: Off the Charts, a national juried exhibition exploring the stories, knowledges, and experiences that exist beyond, between, and outside the records, systems, and narratives through which healthcare institutions define and document human experience.

Presented as part of Creating Space 17: Off the Charts, this exhibition asks what remains undocumented in healthcare and what is lost when complex human experiences are reduced to records, diagnoses, data points, and institutional narratives. Unsilenced Stories invites artists to consider the stories that live beyond the chart. Through contemporary creative practice, artists can challenge dominant narratives, reveal hidden histories, document alternative ways of knowing, and reimagine what counts as knowledge within health and healthcare.

Thematic Categories

CAHH welcomes submissions that engage the following themes:

  1. Parallel Records: Works that explore stories existing alongside official records, including personal narratives, caregiving experiences, family histories, patient journals, shadow archives, and forms of knowledge that remain undocumented within institutional systems.
  2. Bodies Beyond Measurement: Works that examine aspects of embodiment that resist quantification, including experiences of chronic illness, disability, madness, neurodivergence, pain, fatigue, sensory experience, and other forms of embodied knowledge.
  3. Memory, Ghosts, and Inheritance: Works that address grief, loss, memory, intergenerational trauma, ancestral presence, inherited conditions, family archives, dementia, absence, and the ways histories leave traces on bodies and communities.
  4. Indigenous Knowledges, Sovereignty, and Relational Care: Works that centre Indigenous understandings of wellness, kinship, land, memory, healing, community care, and relational responsibility. CAHH welcomes submissions that challenge colonial systems of healthcare and documentation while affirming Indigenous sovereignty over stories, knowledge, cultural practices, and ways of knowing.
  5. Counter-Mapping Care: Works that explore alternative networks, ecologies, and practices of care, including mutual aid, chosen family, community health initiatives, informal caregiving, activism, collective responsibility, and non-institutional approaches to wellness.
  6. Rewriting the Record: Works that intervene directly in systems of documentation, diagnosis, archives, bureaucracy, and institutional authority. Artists may examine questions of voice, representation, consent, erasure, surveillance, and power within healthcare systems.
