UAAC-AAUC Conference 2024: Call for Sessions

October 24 – 26, 2024 at Western University, London, ON
Submission Deadline: March 31, 2024

We invite the submission of session proposals for the 2024 UAAC-AAUC conference by session Chairs, to be held at Western University, in London, Ontario, from October 24 to 26, 2024. We aim to offer a range of panels, roundtables, workshops and creative sessions that reflect UAACʼs diverse constituents, in terms of membership, scholarship, and research-creation practice. Panels, roundtables, workshops and creative sessions are invited that interrogate all time periods and cultural frames of art history, visual and material culture, studio practice, research-creation, design practice, theory and criticism, pedagogy, and museum and curatorial practice.

1. We welcome sessions that address anti-racism, decolonization, immigration, diaspora, disability, gender, and sexuality. We also encourage sessions that address global or transnational topics and approaches from all time periods. Sessions that do not require a standard room, such as outdoor and land-based sessions, performances, walking events, etc. are encouraged. Working groups, associations, and caucuses who can envision multi-year participation at the annual conference are encouraged to submit (and can submit a pre-constituted session). Although the official conference will end Saturday, October 26, we leave open the possibility of organizing longer workshops, field trips, and land-based sessions by registration on Sunday, October 27.

2. We will endeavor to support a very limited number of hybrid in-person/online panel presentations, and encourage session chairs to propose a range of modes for the communication of academic knowledge, which could include traditional and hybrid panels, but may also include podcasts, videos, performances, audio papers, and other non-traditional formats for the creative communication of academic and artistic knowledge. We encourage presenters to think carefully about the carbon impacts of various forms of travel and communication, including the carbon footprints of digital and online presentations, and to embrace the potential involved in organizing a sustainable and accessible conference. In the event that a proposed session for hybrid in-person/online panel presentation cannot be accommodated, chairs should indicate in their proposal if they are willing to present in person. In acknowledgment of the open letter on sustainability submitted to the UAAC Board in 2023, we particularly encourage sessions that engage with sustainability in form and content and across all of its possible definitions.

3. We welcome session proposals from permanent and contract academic staff, independent scholars, artists and curators, and PhD students as Chairs. Sessions that include a mixture of graduate students and faculty/independent researchers are also encouraged.

  • Only members of UAAC-AAUC may chair or co-chair and/or present papers in conference sessions. Non-members who propose sessions as session Chairs, will be required to become members in the event that their proposals are accepted.
  • Please note that only ONE session proposal will be accepted per UAAC member, whether that proposal is for a single or jointly chaired session, roundtable, or workshop.
  • Master students (MA/MFA) will not chair sessions: they will have the opportunity to propose papers or other format contributions when the call for individual submissions goes out in May 2024.

How to Submit
