Dying.Series 2024 – Call for Participatory Installations

Dying.exhibits invites conversation on death and dying and creates an opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives on death and dying through art and design works, and participatory experiences. This year, the series will invite contributions that engage the public, inviting interaction, and provoking expression.

We envision Dying.2024 as a catalyst for unpacking the uncomfortable: Why is death, loss and grief difficult experiences to discuss? Dying.2024 endeavours to engage with the broader community and asks: What might we as individuals, and as a community, learn from sharing experiences of death, dying and loss? How might things be done/experienced differently?

Over the past 5 years, the Dying.series has attracted over 5000 attendees, over 30 speakers, including 4 opening and keynote speakers in the disciplines of design and healthcare and many exhibiting artists and designers.

In its fifth year, Dying. will continue to offer an opportunity to creatively engage in conversation about fragility, death, dying, loss, and grief through participatory installation and techniques.

We are open to multiple formats (2D, 3D, digital, installation, multimedia etc.) that invite audience participation.

Dying.exhibits will be part of the DesignTO Festival from January 19 to 28, 2024. Previous exhibition venues have included: the OCADU Graduate Gallery and Artscape Youngplace.

Submission Guidelines

This year we are inviting contributions on fragility, death, dying, loss, and grief, under the following themes:

• Design research: knowledge creation, knowledge mobilisation
• Public engagement and public installation
• Designing for loss and grief more broadly: e.g. climate change, Black Lives Matter, mass acts of violence, COVID-19

We particularly invite works within these themes that address issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
