Paint with Pride! Live Painting at the Pride Toronto Art Zone

Paint with Pride! is a pilot project by StreetARToronto created in partnership with The 519 and Pride Toronto.

This is a project that seeks to engage with nine self-identified 2SLGBTQ+ artists living and working in Toronto interested in doing live painting during the weekend of Pride 2024.

Live Painting will take place from Friday, June 28, 2024 – Sunday, June 30, 2024 in one hour time slots.

About StreetARToronto

StreetARToronto (StART) comprises a suite of innovative programs specifically designed for streets and public spaces. StART programs encourage active transportation (walking and cycling), make our streets more inviting and safe, reduce overall infrastructure maintenance costs, showcase local artists, mentor emerging talent, and create opportunities for positive engagement among residents, business owners and operators, artists, and arts organisations.

Individually and collectively StART murals are designed to celebrate the City of Toronto motto “Diversity Our Strength” and foster a greater sense of belonging among all belonging and affinity among and between all.

Project Information

Paint with Pride! seeks to engage with 9 self-identified 2SLGBTQ+ from artists who are living and working in the City of Toronto.

Artists will be live painting on a stretched canvas material sized 3′ x 4′.

Live Painting will take place over the 2024 Pride Weekend during one of the following time slots:

Friday, June 28, 2024 | 9 – 10 pm
Saturday, June 29, 2024 | 3 – 4 pm | 5 – 6 pm | 6 – 7 pm | 8 – 9 pm
Sunday, June 30, 2024 | 1 – 2 pm | 3 – 4 pm | 4 – 5 pm | 6 – 7 pm

Artist Compensation

Artists will be paid $1000 (plus HST) for their participation in this project.

Additionally, 50% of the sale proceeds of their artwork created at the Paint with Pride! Art Zone will be donated to The 519, with the other 50% going directly to the artist.

What to Expect

Artists will be engaged in public painting sessions amidst significant foot traffic, potentially involving numerous individuals who may be capturing photographs or videos and interacting with you. It is essential to manage these interactions to minimise distractions to your workflow.

StreetARToronto will have a photographer and videographer onsite, and is seeking artists who are comfortable with and enthusiastic about StART sharing event images and reels on social media featuring and celebrating participating artists.

Please specify in your application any accommodation needs you may have, and we are happy to provide!

Please note: No masks are provided for spray painters/ aerosol artists. Please bring your own respirators. This is mandatory for all artists working with aerosol.

Overview of Artist Selection Process

The deadline for applications is 7:30 pm on May 17, 2024. In fairness to all applicants, submissions will not be accepted past this deadline.

Submissions will be reviewed by a diverse external Advisory Panel with lived experience as 2SLGBTQ+ community members and creatives.

Artists who meet the criteria will be invited to create a live painting on 3′ x 4′ stretched canvas during the weekend of Pride 2024 and paid a design fee of $1,000.

Advisory Panel will evaluate Artist submissions based on the criteria outlined below.

If selected, artists will be notified on Friday, May 31 and will have until Wednesday, June 4 to accept. In the event that an artist is unable to participate, artists on the waiting list will be called.


Eligible applicants are Artists who:

  • Reside in the city of Toronto
  • Identify as 2SLGBTQ+
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Will be available to paint on June 28, 29 or 30, 2024
  • City of Toronto employees are not eligible to apply.
