The University of Victoria (UVic) and Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park (JRSP) Artist Scholar Residency was created by an interinstitutional partnership and their unwavering belief in cultivating the arts. The successful applicant will enjoy a September-October residency at the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park (for 2-5 weeks) with an additional one week at UVic to engage with the Faculty of Fine Arts faculty and students.

Project Requirements

This Residency is for artists and scholars seeking space to focus on creating a work for exhibition or publication that is in some way informed by their investigation of Jeffrey Rubinoff’s work and their experience working at the sculpture park. The awardee will relocate to Hornby Island BC and Victoria BC for the entire residency period (2-6weeks). If asked to, the awardee will hold a show and/or reception or talk at the JRSP at the end of the Hornby-based portion of the residency to present their project. Additionally, they will give a lecture(s) at UVIC during the Victoria-based portion of the residency related to their project and have an exhibition if applicable.

Eligibility

Artists:
The applicant must be a professional artist as determined by similar criteria used by the Canada Arts Council. We are looking for:

  • Specialized training in artistic field
  • Recognized as a professional by peers in the field
  • A history of exhibitions, public presentations and/or publications
  • Curatorial activity will also be noted

Scholars:
To be eligible to apply for this residency, the applicant must be a distinguished scholar in a field related to the arts. We are looking for a combination of:

  • Specialized experience and/or education in specific field
  • A history of research, public presentations and/or publications
  • Curatorial or artistic endeavors will also be noted

The Barn (one of the studio spaces for the awardee).

Compensation

The awardee will receive a stipend of $5,000 (CAD) in addition to the covered costs: All travel, food, and accommodation will be covered by the residency, along with a budget to cover materials and shipping (if applicable).

Selection Process

After submissions are closed, applications will be reviewed by a committee. The successful applicant will be notified by February, 2026.

  1. Artist Biography
  2. CV
  3. Portfolio (artists)
  4. Project Proposal
    a. Include description of the project with cost estimates.
    b. Include a timeline of proposed project with the number of weeks at JRSP and daily/weekly time working at the Park.
    c. Include initial ideas about what you could share with students at UVic in Victoria, BC.
    d. Include a plan for an exhibition, publication submission, research report of your work with details of location/institution, duration, materials, etc.
