Two Fully Funded Art / Curatorial Residencies in Havana, Cuba

Deadline: July 31, 2023 at 23:59 EDT

ArchiveThing and Unpack Studio invite any professional Canadian (citizen and PRs) artist or curator of all backgrounds and at any stage of their career to submit applications for a fully funded residency in Havana, Cuba at the Unpack Studio Havana Residency. ArchiveThing and Unpack Studio are grateful for the support of a Canada Council for the Arts Cultivate grant.

The residency will allow the successful applicants to connect to the dynamic art scene of Havana while living and working at the Unpack Studio residency in Vedado, one of Havana’s main neighbourhoods. More information, images and blogs by previous residents may be seen at and on our social media platforms and IG: @UnpackHavana

Included are:

  • A round trip flight
  • Lodging
  • Daily meal stipend *

The artist must cover their own travel health insurance (mandatory by the Cuban government), art supplies (which must be transported by the artist) and toiletries.

* The daily stipend is calculated to cover 3 meals per day. Due to current food shortages in Cuba, if the artist has specific dietary restrictions, they would be strongly encouraged to take food with them. The daily stipend would not cover alcohol.

How to Apply:

  • Complete the application form (found here). Include an artist
statement (300 words) and a project proposal (450 words)
  • 10 to 15 images with a list of artworks

you are applying for this opportunity.

The successful applicants will be required to post on social media, write a blog for the Unpack Studio website and present their project on a new upcoming artists’ archive platform called ArchiveThing (in development now). This could take multiple forms, such as working with the archives on the ArchiveThing platform itself, a workshop or presentation (online/in person) and/or an essay. A small preliminary exhibition at the end of the stay in Havana may be organized, with the potential for further exhibitions at a later date. Other possible outputs can be discussed with the team.
