Call for Applications: The New Voices Community Arts Residency
CALL FOR ARTIST: The New Voices Community Arts Residency
The New Voices Community Arts Residency is now accepting applications from equity- seeking populations to conduct a three-month community-centered artist residency at the Arts Council Windsor Region (ACWR), located in the Walkerville neighbourhood of Windsor, Ontario. The residency offers artists the time to connect with the local community, conduct research, and develop a project that responds directly to the specificity of the Walkerville neighbourhood and its surrounding districts.
The New Voices Community Arts Residency is an opportunity to engage with the community through projects, programming and research to broach new territories and engage with the local community. The goal of the residency is to make space for artists to explore and experiment with new ideas and approaches within the realm of community engaged art practices.

What does the residency offer?
Time: The residency is three months, running from Sep. 01 – Nov. 30, 2022.
The nature of this residency will unfold as one month for research, one month for execution of the community project, and one month for exhibition/sharing of the results.
Space: The artist will be given access to office space with computer facilities, internet access, printing, and access to the gallery space to develop and conduct community gatherings and meetings (with evolving COVID guidelines, restrictions or requirements as needed). The selected artist will also have access to the New Voices billboard as an accompanying component to their project and research in the final month of their residency.
Fees: The artist will receive a monthly fee of $1,800 for the duration of the 3-month residency ($5,400 total), a production budget of $3,500 (including cost of insurance) and the technical support throughout the residency from the Project Coordinator who will also serve as a liaison between the artist in residence and the community. Travel expenses up to $600 are covered by the residency. An apartment in Walkerville is available for rent for the duration of the residency for $800/month (all utilities included). The artist is responsible for the monthly rental payments.
Expectations: It is expected that the artist will develop a community-oriented art project as a result of their research conducted during the residency. To socialize the project, the artist will give one public talk (or equivalent) during their time as the artist in residence. There is also an expectation for the artist to develop a unique proposal for the New Voices billboard space based on their research and findings. We do not hold expectations for the artist to be physically present within Windsor and the Walkerville community for the entirety of the residency, however as part of the application process we will be asking how much time the artist expects to be able to do so. In consideration for the length of time involved in this residency, we need to gauge expectations for a physical presence and/or virtual in equal weight to the rest of the application.
To apply, please fill out and submit the following form no later than Sunday, August 7th, 2022.
Applications are open to early-, mid- and late-career artists of all disciplines. We strongly encourage applications from underrepresented and marginalized voices, including new generation artists, newcomer artists, artists of colour, Indigenous artists, artists with disabilities, francophone artists, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities. We welcome sound, visual, dance, theater, performance and literary artists to apply. If you are an artist that transcends the categories listed, we are very interested in receiving your application as well.
The artist in residence will be selected by a jury composed of Hiba Abdallah (current New Voices artist in residence) and ACWR staff Kaitlyn Karns, Ostoro Petahtegoose and Alejandro Tamayo. Results will be announced on Friday, August 12.
