Art Handler, Thompson Landry Gallery


Opened in March of 2006, the Thompson Landry Gallery has one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Toronto. Pioneering new ground for galleries in Toronto, the Gallery showcases both the very best of the new generation of Quebecois contemporary artists, as well as the great masters of Quebec. Thompson Landry Gallery prides themselves on the impeccable service they give their clients, including the organization of deliveries and installation of artwork in their homes.

We are seeking a part time art handler with strong installation and carpentry skills. The position includes packing, delivering, crating and installing artwork. Applicants must be able to work flexible hours and be comfortable working in both a gallery setting and in clients’ homes.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience handling artwork – including packing, installing and crating
  • Has driver’s license G with a clean driving record
  • Must provide your own tools
  • Must provide your own truck or panel van
  • Must be bondable
  • Must be able to work flexible hours (some weekends and evenings)
  • Must be comfortable carrying and dealing with large and heavy artwork
  • Must be comfortable driving most kinds of trucks and vans

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Wrapping, delivering and installing a variety of artworks including paintings and sculptures
  • Keeping inventory of the stock of hanging and packing supplies at the gallery and ordering when necessary
  • Keeping the gallery artwork storage facilities organized and clean
  • In charge of leading a crew of gallery staff loading in exhibitions at the gallery
  • Weekly changes to the artwork on the gallery walls
  • Packing and crating artwork safely for shipment worldwide
  • Occasional framing of artwork, and the fixing of frames on artwork
  • Driving a truck, either locally or long distance between cities
  • Proper handling and packing of artworks and securing in truck for safe transport
  • Understand how to properly wrap, load, span, and tie in artworks within a truck to keep them safe and stable during transport
  • Installing artworks professionally in settings ranging from corporate to residential properties
  • Interacting with customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Communicating with the Gallery Team throughout the day
  • Occasional basic gallery maintenance and organization

Key Competencies:

  • Physically fit and has the ability to work comfortably on ladders, scaffolding or mechanized lifts
  • Construction, carpentry, or woodworking experience
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Superior organization skills
  • Professional appearance and demeanour
  • Familiar with basic art terminology
  • Welding and rigging experience is preferred
  • Some knowledge of gallery lighting is preferred
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance is preferred
