Exhibitions and Collections Manager

Medalta in the Historic Clay District, Medicine Hat, Alberta
32 hours/week (4-day work week) | $50,000 annually

Medalta is seeking a collaborative and organized Exhibitions and Collections Manager to lead the development of exhibitions and oversee stewardship of the Historic Clay District’s extensive collection of historic pottery, industrial equipment, and contemporary ceramics.

Reporting to the Director of Heritage and Facilities, this role provides leadership across both the Exhibitions and Collections departments, balancing strategic planning with hands-on implementation. The Manager will work closely with artists, staff, volunteers, researchers, and community partners to support Medalta’s mission as a nationally recognized industrial museum, contemporary ceramic arts centre, and community gathering place.

Located in Medicine Hat’s Historic Clay District, Medalta preserves one of Canada’s most significant ceramic manufacturing sites while supporting contemporary artistic practice, education, and public engagement through its museum and internationally recognized artist-in-residence program.

Key Responsibilities

Exhibitions

  • Lead the planning, development, installation, and evaluation of exhibitions
  • Collaborate with artists, staff, and community partners on exhibition development
  • Coordinate exhibition schedules, logistics, interpretive materials, and written content
  • Support public programming and visitor engagement initiatives

Collections

  • Oversee care, documentation, storage, and management of collections and artefacts
  • Ensure collections practices align with museum standards and institutional policies
  • Coordinate conservation, research, and artefact movement activities
  • Respond to collection-related inquiries from researchers and the public
  • Support long-term preservation and collection development planning

Leadership & Administration

  • Supervise and mentor staff and volunteers
  • Contribute to planning, policy development, and project implementation
  • Assist with grant writing and funding applications
  • Collaborate across departments to advance organizational goals

Qualifications

  • Degree in Museum Studies, Art History, Curatorial Practice, History, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in museum collections, exhibitions, or curatorial work preferred
  • Knowledge of collections care, documentation systems, and conservation standards
  • Experience developing exhibitions or interpretive projects
  • Strong writing, research, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Supervisory experience considered an asset
  • Familiarity with Alberta museum standards and heritage-sector best practices considered an asset

Compensation & Benefits
