Apply to the School of Art’s MFA program at the University of Manitoba

The School of Art’s MFA program has many enviable strengths that set it apart from other programs in Canada:

Facilities
Most visibly, the School of Art is housed in the amazing ARTlab building which boasts state-of-the-art facilities for intensive studio production. Purpose-built facilities include new studios for print media, papermaking, and photography (both darkrooms and digital), along with beautifully-lit spaces for painting, a comprehensive ceramics area, extensive sculpture fabrication facilities, a Mac lab and private editing rooms, a large-format digital print shop, and a sound stage. All of our facilities are accessible.

• All students have 24-hour access to all facilities and to their huge private studio spaces (~380 sq ft).
• All students mount their final solo exhibition in our Category A professional School of Art Gallery (which is accompanied by a colour catalogue).

Mentorship
Our program emphasizes intensive studio research under the close mentorship of expert faculty; ample one-on-one time with faculty is a signature of our program. Additionally, we offer:

• group critiques, seminars, and University-wide electives,
• a dynamic Visiting Artist lecture series (which most recently hosted Gedi Sibony and Mary Anne Barkhouse),
• the chance for professional artists from the Winnipeg community to join your advisory committee, and
• access to the many resources of a large U15 university.

Funding
Our competitive funding package starts with a substantial yearly stipend from the School of Art (based on budget approval – $10,000 is approved for the first year), and the opportunity to receive one of the $14,000/year University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships. Our second-year students can also apply for one of our large ($1,300-$11,000) internal awards and scholarships. Additional paid teaching assistantships are provided for the duration of our program.

Winnipeg
Winnipeg is a supportive, notably affordable, and vibrant place to be as an artist. Winnipeg is well-known for its rich cultural environment: the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Plug In ICA, Urban Shaman, aceartinc., and PLATFORM Gallery are among its many exciting gallery venues. Border Crossings, the Manitoba Museum, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet are some of the “brick and mortar” cultural institutions; these are complemented by innovative events and festivals such as send + receive and a whole host of positive winter activities, such as the Warming Huts architectural competition, and the longest river-skating trail in the world.

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation.
