Kodachrome
May 23 – July 14, 2024
Opening Reception: Sunday, May 26, 2 – 4pm
The Elora Centre for the Arts
Anne-Marie Olczak’s recent paintings have been an exploration of colour, process and memory distilled through the parameters of the grid. The grid offers a structure: a place to start and to explore. In Kodachrome, Anne-Marie has turned to old family slides from the 1970s for inspiration. The super saturated colours derived from the Kodachrome process offer not only challenges in her ideas about colour but also presented the opportunity to look back into the era that gave us these hues. What started as an exercise in exploring colour relationships became more about memory and nostalgia. Working in the grid allows an order in which to explore these ideas: containing them in a structure that controls the medium and the emotion of the colour. Layering of colour, slowly applied, and of grids and marks, create a depth in these paintings that evoke an emotional response in the viewer, triggering their own memory or emotion associated with the colours.

About the Artist
Anne-Marie Olczak is a Toronto based abstract painter whose work is driven by a continued desire to explore the power of colour. Working with the grid provides a starting parameter where details are expressed through this exploration of colour and the intersections and depths of layers of paints and glazes. Anne-Marie’s work is in many private collections in Canada, the US and Britain and she has participated in solo shows, group shows and art fairs in Toronto and internationally. She also works as curator for Toronto pop up art space, The Gallery Wall. Anne-Marie is looking forward to a late summer residency in Victoria, BC where she plans to deepen her study of the construction and form of colour.
