About Collective City
Collective City traces and preserves the history of visual art collectives that have operated as alternative exhibition venues in Toronto from the 1980’s to the present day. The artwork that these groups produced couldn’t have been more different. But what they all understood was that exhibiting your work outside the traditional gallery spaces required a different approach and a desire to band together.

Since founding in 2011, Collective City has made 18 short documentaries and published 70+ profiles about Toronto-based art collectives on our database.

Outreach is core to Collective City’s mandate. We donate the documentaries to schools (high schools, colleges and universities) and institutions as a resource for students and instructors. Collective City has a free public screening each year of its latest documentaries at the Revue Cinema in Toronto.
