In this workshop, we will be building upon the learning outcomes and impact of the workshop Collections through the Prism of Diversity Series originally presented in 2016. This presentation was amidst the strengthening narrative of Black Lives Matter movement. With the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Report and its recommendation #67 and the tragic unearthing of trauma of Residential School history in Canada impacting indigenous people directly influenced discourse of Collections raising concerns of erasures and absences. With the subsequent years of pandemic, these issues are amplified centering around representation. Art galleries and museums are part of this discussion, and many are beginning to make strides in Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) within their institutions. However, the need for art galleries and art museums to diversify their collections has continued to be a pressing issue.
This workshop, now titled Collections Through the Prism of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access), will focus on how institutions can work to diversify their collection while still working within their missions and mandates. Participants will learn strategies on how to engage and maintain connections with their communities to build a collection that is inclusive and representative of the people they serve. The workshop will feature discussions on methods of acquisition and collecting. We will also learn about the strategies in making a more accessible gallery collection.
Topics will Include:
- Acquisition Strategies For An Inclusive Collection
- How To Develop An Audience Strategy In Tandem With Building Diversified Collections & Exhibitions
- Financial Access And Strategies Towards Building A Diversified Collection
