With an increase in the number of artists participating in socially engaged, community-based, and digital artistic practices, the traditional collecting model of institutions is consistently being re-evaluated. It is the responsibility of the gallery to be responsive to the continuous changes of the art sector and adapt to artistic trends. This workshop will examine different types of artistic practices and how they can fit within the current traditional institutional collecting model. Institutions will learn how to collaborate and support these types of artists by collecting their work and incorporating them into their programming.
Traditional collecting models of institutions are also deeply rooted in colonial standards and ideologies. Many of the major institutions in Canada contain Indigenous art and cultural objects stolen from Indigenous communities. Institutions must learn how to care for these objects and reconsider their role in managing them. This workshop will address the urgency for institutions to understand their role in properly maintaining Indigenous works in their collections, and will also give participants strategies on how to engage with Indigenous art and artists in thoughtful ways.
Topics will Include:
- Rethinking Institutional Collecting Models
- Beyond the White Wall: Bridging Exhibitions, Programs, and Community
- Engaging and Working with Indigenous Art and Artists
- Roundtable Discussion
