Photography Lighting Workshop
Saturday, January 25, 2025 | 10am – 4:30pm
This one-day studio workshop focuses on the use of light in portrait photography, exploring the power and importance of light in image making. It includes hands-on shooting demos with a model and exercises on how to employ different lighting techniques and sources. Students will learn to set up and use professional studio lighting equipment and explore how light and shadows work together. Participants will be able to share their work with peers and get feedback in group discussions. Theoretical foundations will be explored to understand the use of light not just as a tool, but also as a creative language rich in meaning, rhetoric, and poetry. Required Equipment: DSLR Camera and Camera Lens.
“Light is always there in photography, but it never shines in the same way.”
– Instructor, Marina Black
Sustainable Sewing: Mending Workshop
Sunday, February 9, 2025 | 10am – 4:30pm
This one-day studio workshop explores the fundamental skills in textile repair and repurposing. Discussions will be held on the broader context of sustainability in clothing and other textiles from the perspectives of creators and consumers. Students are introduced to contemporary and historical textile repair techniques, including machine and hand-darning, needle felting, patching, and Sachiko. An emphasis is placed on visible mending techniques and developing a personal aesthetic. Through discussions and studio work, participants will collaboratively develop a manifesto that outlines their principles, goals and practices for greater sustainability in fashion and textiles. Students are responsible for bringing some of their own supplies.
“Learning how to repair clothing extends the lifespan of your garments. Repairs can be functional, but also creative when incorporated into the design. Visible repairs draw attention to themselves, allowing a garment to change and develop as it is worn out.”
– Instructor, Aisha Ali
