Vivian Thierfelder: Addicted to Nostalgia

August 7 – September 4, 2021

We are pleased to announce that a feature exhibition of works by Vivian Thierfelder starts August 7th at Mayberry Fine Art. Vivian Thierfelder: Addicted to Nostalgia will be viewable online and in-person at our Toronto location at 324 Dundas Street West. We are open to the public, so no appointment is needed to come view the works.

Her latest exhibition, Vivian Thierfelder: Addicted to Nostalgia, features small-scale, still-life paintings. The work is expertly crafted and intricately detailed, as Thierfelder plays with compositional scale and dramatic colours in each piece. The work pulls the viewer in, posing the questions, “can a past that has slipped out of reach be reclaimed by means of nostalgia?” and “should it ever be?”

Summer Glory by Vivian Thierfelder, 13.5″ x 13.5″ watercolour on paper

Vivian Thierfelder (b. 1949) was born in Edmonton, Alberta and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta in 1970. Before focusing on art full-time in 1983, Vivian worked in the areas of foreground preparation for the Natural History diorama program, exhibit design and construction at the Provincial Museum of Alberta and as part of the graphics department of a major telecommunications firm.

Since beginning to paint more than 40 years ago, Vivian has worked in oils, acrylics and today, exclusively in watercolour. Her subject matter has ranged from leaf, grass, and snow compositions to elaborate still life and on into exotic tropical flowers whose riotous colours first had an impact on her during a year-long stay in Hawaii. Her works often utilize subtle diagonals to lead the eye into the heart of the painting, encouraging the visual exploration of perceived three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Celebrating the lushness of the natural world is a main theme, as is the glory of colour and detail revealed by strong natural light.

She has received numerous awards for her work and is in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Glenbow Museum, the collection of HRH Queen Elizabeth II Collection of Drawings and Watercolours, Royal Library, Windsor Castle, the University of Alberta, and numerous corporate and private collections.

The show will run from August 7th – September 4th. Please email if you are interested in any of the works.
