The exhibition A Feminist Lens presents archival material from the collection, never before seen in Toronto of the 1973 Women & Film International Festival, a groundbreaking 10-day event at the St. Lawrence Centre in Toronto that showcased films by women in cinema from the 20th century.

This exhibition draws on research supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

TIFF Wavelengths Presents is proud to feature a programme of shorts, Cultural Rememory: The Films of Christopher Harris, from the award-winning filmmaker whose work explores African American historiography through experimental cinema. Employing manual and photo-chemically altered images, Harris reclaims the American visual archive to investigate its relationship to racial identity and political processes of displacement. Christopher Harris will be in attendance for a Q&A with TIFF Director of Programming, Festival and Cinematheque, Robyn Citizen following the screening.

The March edition of TIFF Wavelengths Presents is the Canadian Premiere of Henry Fonda for President, a highly erudite and entertaining essay film chronicling a changing America viewed against and through the life and times of the eponymous, mythic Hollywood star. Deftly weaving cinematic and political insights across a wide spectrum of research, the film probes Henry Fonda’s fascinating biography and extensive filmography to reveal parallels with a paradoxical national imaginary. Filmmaker and film historian Alexander Horwath joins TIFF Senior Curator Andréa Picard for a recorded Q&A following the screening.

Recently selected for the Library of Congress National Film Registry, Zeinabu irene Davis’ feature debut Compensation is an intimate observation of falling in love in chaotic times. Weaving a timeline of African American milestones through music and archival photography, the film is a strikingly original reclamation of early cinema aesthetics and filmgoing culture. The filmmaker joins TIFF Director of Programming, Festival and Cinematheque, Robyn Citizen for an onstage Q&A following the Toronto Premiere of the film’s new 4K restoration.
