ULethbridge alumna Julia Wasilewski comes back to teach the next generation of students
Julia Wasilewski came to Lethbridge for its easy pace of life and the renowned degree programs at the University of Lethbridge. There, she found inspiring mentors who encouraged her down a path of discovery to education in the dramatic arts field.
Julia’s passion for education led her back to ULethbridge in 2018, when she joined the Department of Drama as an Assistant Professor in the Technical/Design major.
This innovative program focuses on design and technical production, appreciating historic traditions and anticipating future trends. Julia’s practice embraces the intersection between traditional design conventions and contemporary renewable approaches to design in an effort to embrace sustainable theatre-making.
Through our rigorous program of hands-on theatre experiences, refine your artistic techniques and develop lifelong skills such as creativity, confidence and discipline. Courses in theatre history and theory provide a comprehensive understanding of drama’s essential role in society.
As a Technical/Design student, you can explore courses in all manner of technical theatre while gaining a range of skills and learning techniques in scenery, lighting, sound, costuming, stage management and safety. Enrich your classroom experiences by working behind the scenes in a season of exhilarating diverse theatre productions that range in style and scale.
For Julia, her passion for Lethbridge and education led her back to ULethbridge to teach, support and mentor the next generation of theatre professionals, mirroring her own journey as a student.
Our internationally recognized faculty members encourage experiential and Work-Integrated Learning opportunities. With ULethbridge’s small class sizes, you get more hands-on learning and more opportunities to experiment and take risks in and out of the classroom.
Julia continues her practice as a theatre designer, specializing in costume design and teaching costume-focused courses, as well as courses in mask making, stage makeup, scenic paint and alternative materials.
“Every production I work in is a new experience, with new and exciting goals and collaborative relationships to explore,” says Julia.
“I love being able to work in a team atmosphere and offer students the opportunity to work alongside me to challenge and explore their artistic skills and interests. Teaching design at my alma matter is such a special opportunity to contribute to this community and support its continued growth.”
