TIFF Next Wave Presents: Nowhere

Described by Gregg Araki as “Beverly Hills 90210 on acid,” Nowhere marks the finale of his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy and a classic of New Queer Cinema. A wildly sexual, surrealist fever dream, the film follows the intersecting lives of a group of Los Angeles college students on the day the world is foretold to end. With a hyper-stylized production design, sun-soaked 90s fashion, and a shoegaze-inspired soundtrack, Araki encourages the audience to lose themselves in the absurd unshakable dread that consumes every young generation trying to make sense of an apathetic and careless world. But rather than take things too seriously, Nowhere delivers a wild, Y2K-fuelled capsule of teenage riot and rot.

Put on some makeup (bold blue eyes and red glitter lip strongly encouraged), pull the wig down from the shelf, and join us for a lively Pride Month edition of Sing Along. Ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not… Hedwig and the Angry Inch! Presented in collaboration with the Queer Songbook Orchestra, this event includes warm-up activities and onscreen lyrics so the whole audience can quote, cheer, and sing along with writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell’s cult classic glam-rock musical. Wear your best denim or fringe as an homage to the glam rock style era of endless possibilities (hair dress anyone?).
