Women in Action x Community Impact: Polite Society with Priya Kansara and Nida Manzoor

June 15, 2024 | 5pm
TIFF Lightbox (350 King Street West, Toronto)
Find out more here.

TIFF is introducing a new marquee series called Women in Action, an international survey of some of the most culturally significant and influential action films centering women. All films in the Women in Action series are free to TIFF Members. Become a TIFF Member here.

This special film event will be introduced by TIFF’s Nandita Dutta, who, following the film, will lead a live-virtual Q&A with writer-director Nida Manzoor and star Priya Kansara.

A striking feature debut with South Asian women leading both on screen and behind the scenes, Polite Society is writer-director Nida Manzoor’s (We Are Lady Parts) punchy homage to her early cinematic influences like Jackie Chan, the Coen brothers, and Edgar Wright. Also debuting is Priya Kansara (Bridgerton) as Ria Khan, an aspiring stunt performer who must rescue her decidedly cool older sister Lena from a nefarious marriage and a sinister mother-in-law. A delightful blend of Bollywood melodrama and British humour, this women-centric action-comedy is a refreshing addition to the genre.

This screening will be presented with open captions. The introduction and Q&A will include an ASL interpreter, care of Silent Voice.

Presented in partnership with TIFF Community Impact, TIFF’s South Asian Community Cluster, and TIFF Next Wave.

TIFF Lightbox (350 King Street West, Toronto)
Learn more here.

This special screening of newly restored short films by Man Ray is co-presented with Wavelength Music. One of the proponents of Dada and Surrealism, Man Ray began his legendary quartet of avant-garde short films with Le Retour à la raison in 1923, combining solarizing techniques with the use of diffused and refracted glass to create a distinctly dream-like quality. A hundred years later, the films are newly restored with a semi-improvised score by Sqürl ― the atmospheric “marginal rock band” composed of Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan.
