The Toronto Biennial of Art’s mission is to make international contemporary art available to everyone. For 10 weeks every two years, local and international artists transform Toronto and surrounding regions with artworks, talks, and performances that reflect local contexts and pressing issues of our time. The Biennial’s free, citywide programs aim to inspire individuals, bridge communities, and contribute to global conversations from a variety of perspectives. The next Toronto Biennial of Art takes place from March 26–June 5, 2022.

Position Overview

Job Title: Senior Manager, Learning & Mediation Program
Role Type: Full Time Contract, set dates
Contract Length: December 6, 2021 – June 30, 2022 (40 hours/week)
Annual Salary: $60,000-$70,000, based on experience
Benefits: A Health Savings Account is provided after completing the probationary period
Pay: Bi-weekly

The Senior Manager, Learning & Mediation Program is a key member of the larger Public Programming and Learning team. They report to the Director of the department, and work with a dedicated Programs Production Manager and the Exhibition Curators. They manage several event support staff roles including a Learning Assistant. The Senior Manager focuses on implementing existing plans for TBA’s 2022 learning and mediation program with artists, partners, and other collaborators, both online and in-person with necessary Covid-19 precautions in place. The successful candidate is a team player with solid experience in the field of arts education programming to ensure that TBA’s learning and mediation program is delivered smoothly and in the best possible conditions.

Roles and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop programs and resources in close collaboration with the Deputy Director & Director of Programs, the Programs Production Manager, TBA curators, and other members of the Biennial team, as well as artists, project partners, and venues
  • Recruitment, hiring, training, management, and supervision of part-time and contract staff as needed, including a team of docents, in close collaboration with the Production Manager.
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager on management and operations of dedicated Programs spaces within TBA venues; liaising with Biennial partners and venues to ensure that they are fully briefed on schedules, installation plans and program requirements for learning and mediation programs.
  • Management and delivery of an engaging and relevant online and in-person learning and mediation program (mainly focused around already developed learning and public programs) for various age groups that responds to the exhibition and the needs of the local education sector
  • Production of writing contributions and participation in speaking engagements as needed
  • Management of a group booking system and database for public tours and school visits, with the support of a Learning Assistant
  • Coordination with Marketing, Communications, Development, and other Biennial departments, ensuring communication is clear and departmental materials are produced as needed
  • Coordination of appropriate levels of volunteer assistance for learning programs specifically, with the support of a Learning Assistant
  • Stewardship, and development where needed, of local, national, and international partnerships with schools, creative organizations, academic institutions, artists, and leaders in education

Budgetary and Administration Responsibilities:

  • Development, management of, and adherence to program timelines and budgets, and management of reporting and evaluation efforts
  • Providing regular financial updates to the Deputy Director & Director of Programs
  • Support the preparation, administration, and monitoring of contracts with artists, educators, part-time and contract staff, partners, and venues
  • Develop and maintain schedules for implementation, roll out, and evaluation of Programs alongside the Production Manager
  • Participate in invoice oversight and approval for all payments with the Deputy Director & Director of Programs

Qualifications:

  • Approaches all work with a commitment to anti-oppression and equity
  • Minimum 5 years of related working experience in arts education and public programming at the management level
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree, or has equivalent experience, in arts education, public programming, and/or related fields; a master’s degree is an asset
  • Proven ability to develop and successfully implement learning and public programs both online and in-person
  • Solid experience working with/in schools and education institutions; ability to communicate knowledge of contemporary arts and culture to a range of different audiences through programs and resources across digital and in-person formats
  • Current industry knowledge of arts education programs locally and internationally, and best practices for online and in-person learning programs in the context of Covid-19
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills, highly developed communication skills for a variety of audiences and stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal management skills and creative problem solving in fast-paced, multi-stakeholder settings
  • Works collaboratively, and brings a positive attitude, a doer
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and task lists; ability to multitask and prioritize accordingly
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills; detail-oriented especially in relation to budget and timeline management
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of Covid-19 Health and Safety protocols in public settings an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of accessibility principles and practices an asset
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and G-Suite desirable
  • G/G2-level driver’s license an asset
  • Languages spoken other than English an asset
