Artist Talk: Sunday, May 31, 2:00 – 4:00pm
Gallery 1313, Toronto

Ryan Jakubek stages Father / Land as a series of contrasts between the body and terrain across the Cordillera de los Andes. Photographs taken during a five-month survey are reconstructed into layered objects where his father’s body mimics landforms, then fractures through chromatic coding.

Indigenous and Catholic iconography encountered along the route serve as further pairings, grounding the work in a lived history of the land. The resulting visual map shifts between intimate prints and expansive installations, where images are held apart by suspension and spacing that signal an irreconcilable gap.

Taking place in Gallery 1313’s main space as part of the CONTACT Photography Festival open call, Father / Land will be exhibited for a limited run of five days only. Thirty large-scale works encompass a variety of analog printmaking and photographic methods, including photogravure, gumoil, and gelatin silver. An installation element is also featured, elevating distinct planes off of each other by utilizing metal chain fasteners and projected video.
