Raymond Girard: Brick Weaving
March 21, 2018 – June 20, 2019
Brick Weaving represents 401 Wellington’s former vocation as the McGregor Socks knitting mill – and to its transformation into Stantec’s “factory” of creativity, where architectural and design concepts are born.
All of the elements of Brick Weaving are rendered in Lego™ bricks – over 50,000 of them. Just like 401 Wellington itself, these plastic elements can be reconfigured into an infinite number of uses and adapted to new needs and changing circumstances.
The patterns of the vertical beams reference McGregor’s sock patterns. The architectural styles represented in the 3 larger towers – from historicist to modern – reference the global nature of Toronto’s ideas economy and Stantec’s architectural practice.
Raymond Girard is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist with a background in marketing and interior design. His sculptures in LEGO have been exhibited in Toronto and Hamilton – and can be found in private collections from Los Angeles to Sydney to Santiago.
