PhotoED Magazine: Photography + Activism
Fall 2022 Issue in Print Now
Ethics, activism, and photography’s blurred lines – PhotoED Magazine’s latest release!
+ Call for Submissions: Botanical Photography
PhotoED Magazine shares diverse Canadian photography stories in a brand new light.
We are excited to announce our latest release – IN PRINT NOW! on the theme of ethics, activism, and photography’s blurred lines, curated by award winning photographer, author, and academic Laurence Butet-Roch.
“I often consider the call by art historian Alexis Boylan to become ‘visual activists.’ She tells us that ‘we must reject passivity and mere consumption’ of images to ‘be more assertive, tricky, and thoughtful with our visual atmosphere.’
This issue explores how we, as Canadian photographers, might get there. Documentary photography, while passionate about redressing injustices, remains wary of adopting a radical position, lest it be seen as partisan.”
This special edition features:
- World Press Photo Award winner, photojournalist Amber Bracken,
- Jackie Dives and Kate Schneider share their thoughts on photography and navigating their desires for social change,
- and Danielle Da Silva, founder of Photographers Without Borders, speaks to how photographers should consider their personal ethics.
Artistic practices have also played a key role in changing our social landscape. In this issue, Ingrid Forster presents the eloquent work of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge, who were awarded the 2022 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts for their “socially engaged and politically grounded” work.
Emerging Indigenous photographer Alex Jacobs-Blum answers her ancestors’ call to advocate for her homelands; and KC Adams’ takes her work “Perceptions” to the general public through billboard provocations.
PhotoED Magazine can be purchased as a single issue for $8. a SUBSCRIPTION for $22./ year, or join us as a PATRON for extra perks year-round, starting at $3./month.
