Join us to learn about our MFA program, meet our professors and MFA students, and view graduate student work.

In this bilingual two-year MFA program students work within a variety of artistic practices, from photography and media arts to sculpture, painting and drawing, video and installation art. Students take an in-depth look at theories informing contemporary art and image culture, and choose between an interdisciplinary studio approach or specializing in a single medium.

The Department of Visual Arts is located in Ottawa’s downtown core, home to many of Canada’s most influential and dynamic art institutions, and within walking distance of the National Gallery of Canada, the Canada Council Art Bank Gallery, the Ottawa Art Gallery, SAW Video and the Karsh-Masson Gallery, as well as the Canadian Museum of Nature. Located close by are the Canadian Museum of History, and Library and Archives Canada, and across the river in Gatineau, Québec, artist-run centers AxeNéo7 and Daïmôn media arts center in the La Filature complex.

Faculty members and adjunct professors of the Department are actively involved in exhibiting, research and publishing as well as in curatorial projects, in the areas of art and gender, transnational and post-colonial studies in art, critical questions in museology, and the archive in contemporary art practice, among others. The Department’s adjunct professors include directors and curators of important museums, galleries, and archives, as well as some of Canada’s most outstanding art practitioners, critics, and historians.

Each MFA student is provided with their own individual artist’s studio, and enjoys access to the Department’s state-of-the-art technical facilities, including painting and sculpture studios, darkrooms, digital and 3-D printing laboratories.

Theory courses provide exposure to contemporary artistic and cultural discourse, and the basis for students’ contextualization of their personal studio work within current art practice and theoretical investigation. Students enroll in two Theory courses per academic year; the Professional Internship course, in which students have the opportunity to work at one of the many art institutions in the region, or with a professional artist, is a distinctive feature of our program.

Le Département d’arts visuels de l’Université d’Ottawa offre une maîtrise en arts visuels (M.A.V.).

Le programme est bilingue et il couvre un ensemble de pratiques artistiques diverses, de la photographie aux arts médiatiques, en passant par la sculpture, la peinture, le dessin, la vidéo et l’installation. En plus d’examiner d’un oeil critique les théories de l’art contemporain et de la culture de l’image, les étudiants ont la possibilité d’adopter une approche interdisciplinaire ou de se spécialiser dans une discipline artistique particulière.

Situé au centre-ville d’Ottawa, le Département d’arts visuels est à proximité des organismes les plus influents et les plus dynamiques du monde de l’art au Canada. À quelques minutes de marche, on trouve le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, la Galerie de la banque d’art du Conseil des arts du Canada, la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa, le centre d’arts médiatique SAW et la Galerie Karsh-Masson, ainsi que le Musée canadien de la nature et le Musée de la technologie. À proximité se trouvent aussi la Bibliothèque et les Archives du Canada, et de l’autre côté de la rivière, à Gatineau (Québec), le Musée canadien de l’histoire, et la galerie AxeNéo7 et le centre des arts médiatiques Daïmôn qui sont regroupés dans le complex: La Filature.

Professeurs, y compris les professeurs auxiliaires du Département, sont parmi des artistes les plus renommé au Canada, des critiques ou historiens de l’art ou encore des directeurs et des conservateurs importants dans les musées, galeries et archives. Au Département, nos professeurs spécialisés en histoire et théorie de l’art sont très impliqués dans la recherche. Auteurs de nombreuses publications, ils participent à des projets de conservation dans divers domaines : l’art relatif au genre, les études transnationales et postcoloniales en art, les enjeux critiques en muséologie, les archives dans le contexte de la pratique contemporaine, et bien d’autres.

Le Département d’arts visuels est doté d’installations à la fine pointe de la technologie, y compris des ateliers de peinture et de sculpture, des chambres noires et des laboratoires d’impression numérique ou en 3D. En outre, chaque étudiant du programme MAV a accès à son propre atelier.

Les cours de théorie sont axés sur le discours artistique et culturel contemporain. Ils forment la base de la contextualisation dont se sert l’étudiant pour élaborer ses travaux en atelier, dans le cadre de la pratique artistique actuelle et de la recherche théorique. Les étudiants suivent deux cours de théorie par année et font également un stage en milieu professionnel, soit au sein d’un des nombreux établissements de beaux-arts de la région, soit auprès d’un artiste chevronné.
