PAST & PRESENT features a selection of works made by Collingwood based photographic artist Tjalling Halbertsma over the last five years.
Short interview and impression of the exhibit you can see here.
The exhibition explores Tjalling’s background and his inner travels. And while he works in many different areas of photography, this multifaceted show exhibits mostly portraits.
The Dutch Heritage series is inspired by the Dutch past of the Golden Century, when a whole new style was created by painters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt and many others. Tjalling is especially captivated by their use of light and composition.
The Spirit series was created during the present time of the Covid19 lockdown. It borders the line between photography and painting, and evokes strength and vulnerability.
The past and present also relate to the Classic Portraiture series, showing how one can leave a touching, real legacy for generations to come.
That the present also holds the future is made visible in the thought-provoking large scale tableaux vivants “The Gathering” and “RETRO 2015 to 2025”. “The Gathering” depicts an acceptance of the inner theatre of life, while “RETRO 2015 to 2025” looks at the rise of Techno sapiens: the merge of human and technology.
Photographic artist Tjalling Halbertsma grew up in The Netherlands. While photography was always a part of his life, it was only after 30 years of work and travel, living in different countries and many adventures, that he settled in Canada 6 years ago to finally choose for a professional art career. He is telling his stories through multiple-style photographic art and poetry. Tjalling took part in multiple exhibitions, amongst which the prestigious Salt Spring National Art Prize and the CAPIC exhibition in Toronto 2019. “Past & Present” is his first solo overview exhibition.
