Chilean-Canadian curator Cecilia Araneda is pleased to announce the release the book National Gathering of Latin Canadian Filmmakers: A Memoir. The publication will shortly be available for sale to the general public on the Winnipeg Film Group’s online store.

National Gathering of Latin Canadian Filmmakers: A Memoir is memory document of the first ever National Gathering of Latin Canadian Filmmakers, held 13-15 May 2023 in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyaang / Montréal, organized by Cecilia Araneda with the support of GIV: Groupe Intervention Vidéo and IMAA: Independent Media Arts Alliance. This initiative was made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Montreal gathering was the first of its kind in Canada and brought together over 40 Latin Canadian filmmakers, programmers, curators and scholars from across the country to get to know each other, to discuss Latin Canadian cinema history and to start the process of defining pathways forward as a community. Participants hailed from Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Saint Catherines, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and St. John’s, as well as a visiting curator who came in from Brooklyn – in an interregional, intercultural and intergenerational mix designed to support networking and exchange.

National Gathering of Latin Canadian Filmmakers: A Memoir has been developed as a post-event community resource to spark ideas about what Latin Canadian cinema is today and what it can be in the future, and features essays by Cecilia Araneda (Winnipeg), soJin Chun (Toronto), felippe (Quebec City), Darien S. Nicolás (Montreal), Milena Salazar (Vancouver) and Zaira Zarza (Montreal), that serve as reflections on the event. The publication includes French translations.

  • Experimental Workflows, by felippe
  • Mapping Brazil, Mapping Latin America, Where do we start?, by soJin Chun
  • Women filmmakers of the Latin American diaspora in Canada, by Zaira Zarza
