1) SOUNDplay Festival

Oct 4, 2019 – January 6, 2020
https://naisa.ca/festivals/soundplayseries/

NAISA’s fall SOUNDplay Festival, established in 2002, is a meeting point for experimentation in sound art and new media, encouraging new avenues for exploration.

“NAISA’s 2019 edition of SOUNDplay completes NAISA’s programming cycle exploring the theme ‘Off the Beat(en) Track.’ Although that theme undeniably references NAISA’s journey from Toronto to the Near North in Ontario, it also serves as a point of departure for artists journeying to far off places or for revealing less familiar details that may lie hidden in very familiar places. SOUNDplay 2019 invites audiences to wander down a new path where time and space may be organized differently and where alternative ways for exploring the familiar reveals unfamiliar layers of detail.” – Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art.

SOUNDplay includes exhibitions, performances, screenings, artist talks and workshops and this year features works by artists Gordon Monahan, Geronimo Inutiq and more at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River.

Kinetic Transmissions by Gordon Monahan
Oct 4, 2019 – Jan 6, 2020, Thursday to Monday, 10am – 4pm, PWYC
NAISA North Media Arts Centre, 106 Ottawa Ave., South River, ON

Kinetic Transmissions, created in 2016, uses audio signals to create kinetic movements in motors. The audio vibrations are transmitted through the motors and into resonant objects such as drums, which amplify the audio recordings. At the same time that the audio recordings are transmitted and amplified into the drums, they also cause other motors to tremble and shake in kinetic gestures. These audio-induced movements, in turn, provide kinetic motions that result in percussion events, such as motors that have bells or sea shells attached to them, or wires that play wine glasses or drums as percussion objects.

Off the Beat(en) Track video installation screening

NAISA completes its year long exploration of the theme “Off the Beat(en) Track” with a video installation screening of works exploring auditory and visual rhythms with works by Darsha Hewitt with Nelly-Eve Rajotte, Jaroslaw Kapuscinski, Myriam Boucher, Jeff Morris and an early film by Canadian animation pioneer Norman McLaren.

By Land and Water by Geronimo Inutiq
Nov 15, 2019, 6pm to 9pm FREE
White Water Gallery, 122 Main Street East, North Bay

“By Land and Water” is a live audiovisual performance by Geronimo Inutiq with ambient electronic music, and manipulated video footage that will take place during the Downtown Gallery Hop at The White Water Gallery in North Bay and the North Bay Film Festival. Taking us across northern Ontario roads and waterways, and following the road beyond into other provinces – video segments are slowed down, manipulated, and rearranged to form an abstract visual narrative, with the countryside as the main focus of reflection. This performance is a co-presentation with Near North Mobile Media Lab, White Water Gallery and NAISA.

The audio-visual works of Geronimo Inutiq
Nov 17, 2019, 2pm Admission by Donation
NAISA North Media Arts Centre, 106 Ottawa Ave., South River, ON

By combining video jockeying with the practice of DJ-ing, archives and original material can be presented in an experimental cut-up approach. Artist Geronimo Inutiq has brought his audio-visual works into performance spaces as well as museums and art galleries, and has seen this base of video remix evolve to documentary video and experimental film. This screening / artist talk is a co-presentation with Near North Mobile Media Lab, White Water Gallery and NAISA.
