In theatres now, Monster is the critically acclaimed new film from award-winning director Kore-eda Hirokazu, the master filmmaker behind Shoplifters (2018), Broker (2022), and Still Walking (2008). The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it took the Queer Palm and Best Screenplay (written by Yuji Sakamoto), followed by its North American Premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, the film is the final score by legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
After a mother discovers that a teacher’s bullying is behind her young son’s sudden strange behavior, she storms into his school demanding an explanation. Continually left without satisfactory answers and with an increasingly distressed child she furiously escalates her concerns to the school board and the media. But as the story unfolds through the multilayered perspectives of mother, teacher, and child, the real truth gradually emerges and proves much more complex than anyone could have expected.
Monster has received an uproar of praise from critics, and is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with The New York Times naming the film one of the finest of 2023.
