Night Visions

January 19 – March 16, 2024
Reception: Friday, January 19, 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Admission free. All welcome.

Latcham Art Centre is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Montreal-based artist Mathieu Larone. In Night Visions, the artist presents pencil crayon drawings, animations, and collaboratively made music videos that embrace the ideas of transition, the magical, and the ordinary turned extraordinary. Visually, his drawings recall classic Looney Tunes backgrounds, but include colours and symbols that invite viewers to question these familiar spaces made strange. Conceptually, these works glide back and forth between existing as illustrations made for commercial purposes and stand-alone artworks. As one of the first solo presentations of Larone’s work in a public gallery, this exhibition reveals years of accumulated work, while blurring the line between fine art and illustration.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Remarks begin at 7:30 PM. Latcham Art Centre acknowledges the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville for their exhibition support.

About the artist:
Mathieu Larone (b.1995) is an artist living and working in Montreal. His work is known for its simple juxtaposition of conflicting ideas and symbols, set upon bare and austere backdrops. He works primarily in the field of illustration and experimental animation. Larone obtained his bachelor’s degree at OCADU in Toronto in 2020. After moving back to Montreal during the pandemic, he began working on a wide variety of projects, ranging from music videos, editorial illustration commissions, book illustration, institutional illustrations, as well as personal projects. Over the last three years, his focus has shifted to projects that allow him to explore his own sensibilities and collaborate with other passionate artists.

Larone has been commissioned by New Yorker Magazine, the Polaris Music Prize, the New York Times, Penguin Books, and Théâtre du Quat’sous, among others. Recently, his work has been featured in several group shows including the New Chitose Airport Animation Festival (Sapporo, Japan), Skylab Gallery (Columbus, Ohio), BSide GALLERY (Hamilton, Ontario), and Comic Arts Brooklyn (New York).
