Kitchener Market Front Stairway Mural Project
Call for Proposals
Professional artists working or living in Waterloo Region are invited to submit a proposal for a one-stage competition to design a site-specific work a mural on the stairs leading from the King St. sidewalk up to the Kitchener Market’s front patio and main entrance located at 300 King St E, Kitchener, ON. As the Kitchener Market’s goal is to increase the visibility and beauty of the facility, all proposals should be designed to reflect and accentuate the Market’s role as a community gathering space that supports nourishment, growth, interaction, experimentation and healthy connections.
Location
The Market’s preference is to cover the entire front stairway area, including both street- and sky-facing surfaces, but also welcomes alternative ideas about where a mural installation could begin, end or bleed into, as well as which exact surfaces should be used or left blank
The proposal selection process will rely on recommendations from community stakeholders and involve consulting with a curatorial liaison and City of Kitchener staff. The successful mural will be graphic and vibrant, and become a place-marker that is distinctive, bright and welcoming. The proposed treatment will be painted directly on the stairs by the selected artist(s) using Hub Surface Systems Paints. Proposals must limit their palates to three or four colours chosen from the StreetBond product brochure
Budget
The total budget available to the artist(s)/team, including HST, is $3,151. Design fees, site visits, other consulting, storage, studio rental, legal, insurance and contingency fees must be covered by this commission amount. The City will be responsible for material and installation costs
